Taking it a step forward

At the beginning of the year I said that I would embark on some sort of a spending ban. I have done so and you can see some of my results for January here and for February here. I am currently working on March.

My system is not by any means perfect and I do hope that some of you jumped on the wagon and joined me on the ride. I hope that some of you were stronger and went a step forward and took it all the way by decreasing allowances and being less lenient. I admit that I cannot do that.

However, regardless of the system you chose or even if you have not embarked on one yet, I hope things will change now.

I am not here to judge you or your choices. I have done my fair share of stupid things in my life as well as made some pretty bad decisions. I try my best everyday to be a better person than the day before, but I do not hide the fact that I am far from perfect.

During these times, we might feel that certain things are out of our control or even that everything is out of our control. I cannot tell you how to regain control when I barely know how to stay calm and take it one day at a time myself. However, I refuse to let this time go and not learn anything. for that reason, I decided to take my version of a beauty spending ban a step forward. This will be tough, more so than just deciding to spend less on beauty.

I am prepared to focus on finishing my minis and staying away from any unopened full sized products. I refuse to shop for any new products for as long as it is not safe to leave my house and pick the products up myself from a store. It is easy to shop online and if you really have to then do so rather than go out, but if it is possible just avoid it altogether.

I am not naive enough to think this will make a huge difference in the world and I am sure beauty is the last thing you think about. However, due to my personal circumstances I need something to keep my mind off of things. In addition, this is a good time as any to learn a new habit and to get past my overconsumption tendencies.

In addition, I truly hope that if more people were to adopt such behaviours, retailers would be forced to temporarily close their stores thus helping keeping people safe. Cause while you and I are smart enough to do the right thing and avoid unnecessary travel and avoid crowds etc., not everyone is. While you and I get the chance to work from home, others are forced to go into work. The situation is still not perfect, some retailers even if they do close will make some cruel decisions all for keeping some of their profits or staying afloat. I am glad to see that Urban Outfitters, Lush and Deciem decided to close their stores and still pay their employees. That is should it should be done.

Overall, no matter the reason why you would even consider focusing on the products you have and emptying as many of them, it is a good thing. I know that I am not the first one to push for this and I am sure I won’t be the last, but something gotta give, you know?

Things will change drastically, the life as we know it will be way different and for some of us it already is. Even if we make it past this crisis, we will have to face the consequences which won’t be pretty. I fell horrible for even saying this, but even if you don’t do it for the betterment of humanity, do it for you and your finances. Don’t buy sh*t you don’t need with money you will definitely need. The main indicators of a potential financial crisis are blinking like crazy these days and it is time to take action and think of your future.

Now this article took a dark turn. That was not my intention. No matter how small, every change in the right direction helps. I am tired of seeing all the advents and retailers pushing products that have no place in our lives these days. I am tired of reminders of the things we lost or are about to lose while others are trying to take profits from our anxiety and boredom.

Hopefully this article will come across as I intended. Again, I am not trying to criticise anyone. I am just trying to paint you a picture of how things are and how we can do our own bit to help when it comes to this industry. There are many other ways in which you can help these days, but this is after all a beauty blog and not a news site. No those kind of news anyway.

In short:

  • Use the stuff you have
  • Don’t buy things you don’t need
  • Wait till everyone is safe, as much as possible

And before anyone comes after me, even if I will keep on posting in the upcoming weeks, what I do is not meant to be about pushing products. No, not by any means. If I keep on posting it will be as a way to distract myself and focus on something I love. This is my safe space and a space I am cultivating, so to speak, to empower women and have them join me on a journey of self discovery through beauty. I am failing terribly at times, but I am no writer so I do my best which is all I can do. This blog is NOT a business though.

With that being said, I really hope you got some of the points I was trying to make and that you and your loved ones are safe.
