I love Rituals and the story behind each of their lines. However, from all the ranges, The Ritual of Dao was my favourite.
A few weeks ago, when I first went to a shopping centre after some of the restrictions were lifted, I saw the beautiful green bottles I knew and loved and headed starlight towards them. Then I stopped. The green bottles standing proudly on the Rituals’ display shelves were not the products I knew and loved. In fact, the products I was looking for, were nowhere to be found. Before I got the chance to investigate or freak out, a sales assistant came over to tell me that the Ritual of Dao range was discontinued. I was shocked to say the least. That is not the news I needed.
However, the same sales assistant was quick to tell me that the range was simply renamed and relaunched. I was skeptical to say the least. In all my years avoiding the retailer (I abhor shopping there, but the location was new so I was willing to give the store a shot since it was a new concept store), I never found a sales assistant there that a actually knew her stuff. Last weekend, I decided to give it a chance, especially since I had a loyalty voucher to spend in store. I went for the one product that I knew would not bother me if I hated which is a reed diffuser.
F**k. I just realised that the first photos on my current phone were of the Ritual of Dao Reed Diffuser taken back in Vienna around two years ago. I had been looking forward to using them and now I probably won’t get to. And I am so going to use one of them here. You probably already saw it. This is what happens when I write as I think.
Anyway, reed diffusers are a safe bet to try a new fragrance. Worst come to worst, I would have been able to simply place the diffuser in the bathroom or something and still get some use of the product. It is less personal than a body cream or mist so more likely to get used even if I did not like it. However, there was no need for all the stress.
For the first time in my life, I actually met a sales assistant at that particular retailer that knew her stuff, at least where Rituals was concerned. The Ritual of Dao is still here, just under another name and with a slightly different packaging. So if you are a fan such as myself, there is no reason to worry. The gorgeous and relaxing scent that we all associated with the Ritual of Dao is still with us, but as the Ritual of Jing.
I don’t know why the name changed, I was not expecting it either. I tried to find out whether the name has a connotation that the brand did not want to be associated with, however I came up empty. If you know, let us know as well!
The point is that even though the name changed, the scene of the Ritual of Jing is the same as the once we have gotten accounted to and perhaps even fell in love with in the Ritual of Dao.

The Ritual of Jing (ex-Dao) is relaxing, soft and unisex. It reminds me of nature, but more of a forest rather than a field. It is not super woodsy though, there is another Rituals range that covers those type of scents. Have fun discovering this new range.

I’m a huge fan of Dao and was gutted to discover Rituals discontinued it. It seemed to be a really popular fragrance. I hunted down old remaining stock on other websites, such as Amazon, purchasing as many deodorants, body lotions and shower foams as I could afford! But the supply has finally run dry and so I – also advised by a sales assistant – took a chance on Jing. It’s close enough, but doesn’t have the depth of Dao. It’s a weaker fragrance, in my opinion, so I was interested to read your review of it. Had been considering Trying something completely different but perhaps Jing deserves a second chance… Thanks for sharing. X
I focused mainly on the Reed diffuser and I found it to be very similar or identical even. However, maybe you are right in terms of depth. Even though very similar, the shampoo might be bit more airy. I have yet to try the rest of the range, however I do believe is a good option. Thank you so much for stopping by! Also I found that I like certain Rituals based on my mood (with the exception of Dao and now Jing of course, these I like all day every day) I recommend exploring more, for sure.
Thank you for this post. I picked up a free sample of the Rituals of Dao night balm for the hands a couple of months ago and particularly loved the fragrance. You can imagine my disappointment when it appeared to have been discontinued but I’m so glad I now know what to look for. 🙂

Ok here in the Uk The Ritual of Dao is back on website and The Ritual of Jing is there also . Two different scents if you read website
That is quite surprising. I had more or less the entire Dao range at one point. Now, I started going through the Jing starting with the reed diffuser and ending with the shampoo and they are the same. I honestly cannot notice a difference between the two ranges and my nose is pretty good. Hmm, truly bizarre. Thanks for pointing it out!
also, where did you find he Ritual of Dao? I have been looking at the UK website and only found Jing. I do have to mention that the items I tried are part of the Relax Jing Ritual and not the Sleep one. I have never seen that one before, but I must try to see whether they do have the same fragrance.
Thank you for this post. Now I know to avoid the ritual of Jing, as Dao was my least favourite (each to their own). With Dao, I smelled like green tea after using the soap. 😂
That is true! Hmm. I really did not ever get the green tea vibes from it though. Never tried the soap, but did try the shampoo. I get lotus rather than anything else. But yes, to each their own.
My least favourite scent was form a limited edition Ritual, also a dark Forrest green one whose name I cannot recall. I got the body cream from the outlet and in the jar it smelled sort of nice and on the body it was overpowering and would make me a bit nauseous.. 🤷🏻♀️
Glad you still found the article helpful. I do recommend sniffing the reed diffuser though if you ever have the chance 🙂 the body pH can alter a scent and you might enjoy it in a different format

I was given a gift set years ago and I was hooked like a moggie to catnip, so you can imagine my dismay on finding NO Dao to be found in the online store!

Rituals always refreshes their product names to get them more attention once in a while. Lets take a look at “Happy Buddha” which is now named “Mehr” but was called “Touch of Happiness” in the beginning. Not only the name changes, but they also try to upgrade the scent, packaging and the texture. You can still buy the older versions of each line and most of them will be in a discount. Most workers by Rituals know whats happening and try to explain that to the customers. I hope it’s clear now!
