The most beautiful time of the year is finally here. I know that this year has been incredibly difficult, but hopefully that will not steal away our Christmas cheer. Something I find very therapeutic is opening beauty advent calendars. You already know this as otherwise I would not be known as that crazy person that purchased 14 such calendars in 2019! Yes, I heard about that via social media. I wear my title proudly.
Top Picks for 2020
One of my top picks in terms of beauty advent calendars for 2020 is this one from Cult Beauty. The Cult Beauty Advent Calendar, similarly to last year (review for the 2019 calendar is available here) comes with more than just 25 beauty goodies from brands quite often encountered in the retailers goodies bags, but also brands we see less often.
In the Cult Beauty Advent Calendar, you can find products from brands such as Drunk Elephant, Augustinus Bader, Charlotte Tillbury and Milk, among others. I’ll put this comment here because it’s applicable to a number of retailers.
So I’ve been eyeing the Harrod’s calendar. But I noticed that the price automatically changes to the currency of the country I’m in. Which would be OK if it wasn’t for the fact that the calendar costs 250 GBP but converted it’s the equivalent of 266 GBP. Moreover shipping costs are the equivalent of 29 GBP so overall if I wanted this calendar that costs UK residents 250 GBP with free shipping, I’d need to pay 295 GBP. Closer to 296 GBP today because the exchange rate changed slightly. I’ve exchanged 4 emails with Harrod’s customer service and so far I’ve received no explanation. I got information that shipping costs are fixed for 20 GBP (no answer why I see 29 GBP) and a statement that there are import duties included (they’re not, we’re all still in the EU).
Feel Unique and Charlotte Tilbury websites have successfully discouraged me from buying there because they automatically force me to shop in EUR and the price discrepancies make a difference. I.e. Charlotte Tilbury big pallettes for 60 GBP (65-ish EUR) are for 75 EUR. One of the Mystery Boxes had a price discrepancy of 18 EUR, almost a lip gloss worth.
Cult Beauty tries to shift my viewing currency to EUR every time I visit the site, and of course EUR prices are higher. The calendar? 195 GBP (213-ish EUR) and 230 EUR if you shop in Euro. Other items I looked at also seem to have this 7-8%ish increase when the price in converted to EUR.
I’m so sick and tired of it. Firstly the price differences are for me a discrimination of customers. Secondly for me it’s still a foreign currency so I don’t understand the point. Is somebody that lazy to check that not every EU country has adopted Euro? On the other hand Harrod’s got the currency right but the difference in price is about 7%, so back to problem no. 1.
And now Harrod’s. I also pointed out that both Fortnum’s and Liberty charge 15 GBP for shipping of their calendars. And I could simply pay in GBP if I wanted to, so it’s an honest practice. Also Net-a-Porter on their website have a currency exchange rate that’s close to the current one (fluctuation by 0.5%). So you can if you want to.
I’m assuming it’s the cost of service to manage multicurrency transactions that is shifted onto customers. Really encourages me to spend money in a shop like that.
So the bottom line is: I advice to compare prices and ask customer services of shops why is that so. For smaller baskets the difference is like 5 EUR but when buying more expensive items like calendars for the difference you can get a full size (albeit on the cheaper side) product and that is simply not fair.
On the flip side maybe I’ll stop buying in those shops altogether if they keep forcing me to cover a very unfavourable exchange rate and I will switch to supporting local brands
Thank you for sharing. I am sorry for not realising that this post ended up in SPAM. it is so weird that lately all valuable comments end up there. The system used to work so well until recently… Personally, i still find it better to shop in GBP regardless of where I am shopping from or delivering the item to. I get the best rates that way as my bank is not extorting me despite having pretty high fees. Plus, the pound might go down until the payment is officially made rather than the retailer just blocking the amount (not sure of that happens to you) and I end up paying less.
I know! It can bhquite annoying that so many retailers consider that the whole of EU have the same currency. So many countries have not yet adopted the euro, but who looks so far east? Yours is like 1.1 of mine 🙂 Makes things super easy when I shop at brands such as Reserved or Sinsay 🙂 doe into matter which price I spot first as I have an idea of how much it is. Just a fun fact.
About supporting local retailers – I kinda agree to this. I found so many shops in my country that sell products that normally I would have purchased from abroad and they have them at much better prices. Some Korean brands for example (original products, I checked!) are like half priced compared to the UK. Other classics such as Vichy, La Roche, CeraVe etc are also so much better priced at certain drugstores here. Plus there is local brands – both our countries have some pretty incredible brands with long histories behind them.
Have you also noticed how more and more tores force customers to shop in a pre-defined currency with unfavourable exchange rate?
It’s the reason I don’t shop at Charlotte Tilbury’s website: new pallettes 60 GBP which is ca. 65 EUR but I can buy them only for 75 EUR or the calendar, 150 GBP which is ca. 165 EUR but I can buy it only for 185 EUR. I also don’t shop at Feel Unique and now Harrod’s. I wanted the calendar but I will not buy it because the website forces me to pay 266 GBP instead of 250 GBP because it converts the price. Same for Cult Beauty, 195 GBP for the calendar is ca. 213 EUR but the price on the website is 230 EUR.
That is so strange. I don’t have that issue, not even when I shop directly and have the items delivered straight home. I noticed only that my Net a Porter advent calendar was cheaper than advertised. I will have a look at Harrods and report back
Charlotte Tilbury website: if you select UK / GBP you can ship only to the UK. If you want to ship anywhere else you need to choose a relevant site with currency EUR. You can compare the prices.
On Cult Beauty I get a pop-up that suggests that I shop in EUR and the prices in EUR are higher, i.e. the calendar, I saw few other items, generally they are more expensive in EUR by 7-8%.
Harrod’s converted the calendar’s proce to my local currency when I chose my shipping destination and the price in my currency is significantly higher. I’d have to pay something around 296 GBP for the calendar with delivery.
N-a-P shows me an approximate conversion which is correct (difference 0.5%) but I haven’t ordered anything yet.
I saw Alyaka automatically put me on the EUR version but the prices more or less match (195 GBP calendar for 215 EUR which is almost correct, depending on the day 1-2 EUR more expensive that in GBP).
Really, really weird 🙁
I had a look at Harrods and they don’t deliver the calendar to my country for some reason. However, I did remember shopping in local currency once in several department stores in London and the conversion rate was horrible. Since then, I always chose to shop in GBP as then my local bank does the swap and I found it to be considerably more advantageous even though my bank has quite high interest rates, fees and all that
I think most likely these are the costs of managing a multi currency wallet, one of servces in a portfolio of e-commerce globalization tools. Back in the day when banks would charge a super high fee for changing currency a shop offering this would be useful but nowadays I can sort out my different currencies for much cheaper and simply having every product more expensive “just because” is a rip-off.
On the flipside if there is less and less shops offering an honest payment method I will switch to supporting local brands. Some of them have superb quality skincare I never have the time to try because my cosmetic pipeline is so long and the stash so big and then I buy new GWPs, calendars or special boxes.
I know what you mean. It is also a clear way in which retail is failing its customers once more. They are getting more behind with innovation every single day. The simple fact that they are still supporting traditional financial institutions rather than switching to fin tech which would be more beneficial to both them and their customers is mind boggling.
It doesn’t necessarily has to be a bank. Just an expensive third party company’s service. Harvey Nichols provided information on their website that all their international prices and shipping are managed by some company and the prices may be higher. Indeed they are. I.e. a single Space Mask costs 3.50 GBP. When I choose my country it converts the price, I convert it back to GBP but the price is 4.00 GBP for the same item.
I only would like to be able to choose my currency. And would appreciate if the converted prices weren’t that much higher in general for the principle.
🙁 I understand. Of course they should be the same especially within the EU where they cannot claim there are additional taxes. This is a clear example of taking advantage and/or not caring. Thank you for bringing this to my attention and that of the rest of our little beauty community
I’ve been quite vexed about it for a while now. My only purchase at CT website was 3 years ago, before I realized the price discrepancies. Have been meaning to write their customer service, but I keep forgetting or just feel lazy since I’m on no make-up buy anyway.
As for the calendars I saw that both Fortnum’s and LookFantastic have been sold out. LF just sent an email that due to the high volume it may take up to 4 weeks to dispatch all of the calendars!
I was just about to order the LF when I saw 🙁 The last time I got it, it was still available on Black Friday and was on sale. Ever since I have been avoiding getting it before that date… no can do now. I will probably stick to just three. Funnily enough, after I found out about LF, I went onto Fortnum’s
Yeah, it feels like a lottery as to what will be on sale and what will quickly sellout. I must admit that seeing on sale something I hurried to buy for full price is very disappointing.
