My John Lewis Winter Glow Beauty Box GWP

Let’s not pretend that we do not know what every retailer is trying to pull off. It is blatantly clear, however I cannot say that I mind.

Every single retailer is trying to boost their revenue before the end of the year knowing that this is the time when people are more likely to spend and even more so this time around due to the given circumstances.

We know it, they know we know it so what is the harm? We all get what we want. We, as customers, we get more offers to take advantage of and more for our money while retailers get to reach their KPIs. Or that is how it would go if this were any other year. To be honest, in time around, most retailers are actually trying to stay afloat, pay utilities, pay suppliers, pay rent and pay their employees, basically like every single one of us. Sure, they are businesses and the purpose of a business is to make profit, but I am curious as to how many will actually reach this goal in 2020.

One retailer that I do hope to see make it through is John Lewis. Not only is the brand quintessentially British, a store with a long-standing tradition (which for an outsider such as myself is very intriguing), but it is one of the retailers with the highest scores on the corporate governance scale. This means that the store cares. The extent of this depends on the definition applied, but the actions of the retailer do indicate a more modern application of the term which includes not just profit, but people and sustainability as well.

Ever wondered why the store is actually John Lewis and Partners? It is because every single one fo their employees supposedly has a say. Of course, I never worked for the retailer so I cannot say whether this is actually the case or not, but this is definitely the picture they are trying to paint.

In addition to all the above, John Lewis always provides good value, but mostly incredible quality. But this, combined with their sustainability efforts does have a negative impact on their bottom line, on their profit margin to be more specific.

Excuse my long tangent, I hope you found this information insightful to an extent or simply interesting to read. My point was that John Lewis is a good choice of retailers to support this year.

With that being said, here is John Lewis’ latest offer – a beauty box gift with purchase. This is a good option if you still have beauty products you wish to purchase.

Comments

I know this is not the beauty gift with purchase you are accustomed to. The deal is a good one, but yes, it does not compare to that of other retailers. Totally understandable if you want to skip it. I get that, I truly do.

While I am not affiliated with the John Lewis brand in any way, shape or form, I do care about this brand. The reasons presented above are part of it for sure, but there is just something about the store that makes it very dear to me. I love the atmosphere, the kindness of the sales assistants, I love how not every employee is 20 something years old (there is nothing wrong with with hiring 20 something year old people, but ageism is an issue with many retailers). I love hearing stories from those who have been with the brand for decades and have seen many people come and go. It is just one of those, you know? I do have (at least) one of these stores in every country I lived/got to know really well just FYI.

I am not trying to guilt you into getting this offer. Absolutely not. It is you choice. I just wanted to give you a background story so that you can form your own opinion. It did go further than I intended when I started writing, but if anything, I hope you likes this article if only for the fact that it was different than the others.

The reason why I started this blog is to inform and that is what I am trying to do. If the John Lewis offer is one you want to get, then go for it if it makes sense for you to do so now. If not, then, there will be others offers no doubt. And if you do not need this offer, then skip it altogether without overthinking it. Do what makes sense for you 🙂

  1. I so appreciate this kind of insights into brands and companies! After reading your post I see John Lewis as not just a retailer among many, and one with not super value offers at that, but as a company with distinct character which makes me more inclined to support them. I try to make conscious choices where and what I buy, although wanting to benefit from good offers like calendars and GWPs I accept that not all the brands will i.e. be cruelty free.

    1. Well there is one cruelty free calendar that is pretty cute 😉 haven’t had good lighting to photograph the Oh My Cream calendar, but first impressions were good.

  2. The other ones that I know of are Holland & Barett (liked this year’s one a lot), The Pip Box and Freedom.
Can’t wait for your Oh My Cream review 🙂
I haven’t thoroughly checked but Niche Beauty looks more on the cf side, no?

      1. Yeah, sorry. I was stuck on clean and could not figure out what the F stood for. Guess it is time to 💤 haha.

      2. there is few trends now, cruelty free, vegan and clean and each of them mean different things and are not interchangeable, but it can get confusing, especially because brands advertise the nice things and omit some other things which can lead to false impressions but I think that’s part of the marketing strategy rather than “an honest mistake”. Either way I’m glad to see that those aspects of the beauty industry start to interest consumers on a scale that forces brands to address those topics.

  3. Don’t know all by heart but Liberty calendar looks cruelty free except for one Nars product, so there are some options. What I’ll definitely won’t be getting is L’Oreal’s calendar 😉

    1. Yeah, no. In any case, the L’Oreal calendar is not really worth it. I got it like 4 years ago and I still have products lying around I never used and never got around to throw away
