Using More, Spending Less Challenge Results – October 2021

using more spending less challenge october featuring truly beauty acne patches

I have to say that I am dreading this post, but there is nothing we can do about it now. Also can someone tell me why do I keep giving out spoilers? See, this is why I am never going to get a marketing job in my life. That, and the fact that I refuse to get a new checkup and change my prescription glasses.

You probably noticed all the grammar and spelling mistakes lately. Yeah. that is pretty much due to the fact that this blog editor changed the font and my eyesight is not quite as it should be. It is on me though. I am have been slacking off lately which is why there is also a lack of reviews on here. That and because I have been feeling super exhausted from the cold weather. Nothing agrees with me 🙂 During summer, I was feeling sick from the heat, now I am feeling tired… I am going to pretend that me getting my 5km per day in has nothing to do with it (I might stop otherwise).

Have you ever tried walking 5km+ indoors? It is perhaps the most boring thing one can do. I do feel way better and my head is clearer. 2020 was alright once I stopped panicking, but this year took its toll on my mental health and body. Did I babble enough about nothing? Okay, maybe now I can focus on the topic at hand and will kindly ask you to ignore all of the above so that I can least pretend that I am, even if remotely, a normal person. I wish I could say that I am kidding, but sadly not this time.

I do not even know where to start. The words coming to my mind right now are yikes and wow. Which should we be discussing first?

I am going to start with wow.

I cannot believe I used up over £400 worth of beauty products in a month. Okay, that is not fair. I managed to empty products worth £400 in a month. Is this better? I obviously did not use the products just in October, well not all of them, but I only managed to empty them in October.

Am I going to miss any of the products? Some. The rest were either alright or just not worth it. Find out more below in the new section I intend to include starting October.

Mini Empties Reviews

The Revox MC Smoothing Face Serum is a product I had not used before and yet I liked. I enjoy the brand overall as their basics are better and similar priced as those from The Ordinary. Oh yes, the brands pretty much offers the same products as the Ordinary. The serum is calming and sort of hydrating. It also smells really nice – like Sakura (cherry blossom) trees. It is not a product I in a rush to purchase again, but it was a nice product nonetheless.

QMS MediCosmetics Replenishing Protection Hand Cream is a product that I have had for ages and kept forgetting to empty. I got this cream in a Liberty Beauty Advent Calendar some times ago. I enjoyed it from the first time I tried it – both the texture, the effectiveness and the fragrance of it. I guess this is one of the reasons why I was not in a rush to empty it. However, I have kept it for way longer than I should have had so it was time for it to go. The cream is smooth, absorbs really well leaving the skin velvety and non greasy. It is perfect for those that spend a lot of time typing. I recommend it, but I cannot guarantee that the creams still available to purchase have the same formulae.

Scientia Peach and Glow Hydra Skin Tonic is a product that I will not repurchase. It was okay to use, but I felt like this product has not business on my skin. I am too old for it, ya know? That is the feeling I got based on the fragrance. A full review will follow soon.

The Inkeylist Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating hair Treatment is a definite repurchase. This is a product that I highly enjoyed using and made quite a bit of a difference to my oily scalp and dry(ish) hair. I avoided using it for quite some time (I already have too many haircare products opened that I have yet to finish), but now I cannot wait to get more bottles of it. I am curious to see the effects long terms.

This is about it, but hope you enjoyed finding some extra comments regarding the products in this article. It makes things less dull, I hope.

and now, for the math:

£211.12 (Allowance from Empties) + £17 (Allowance from posts) – £367.46 (October’s Spending) – £2050.13 (Previous Closing Balance) = -£2189.47

Hmm, the results are actually a bit nicer than I expected so maybe no yikes needed? I did spend quite a bit in October on beauty, especially with the advent calendar from Miin as well as the beauty gift with purchase from Cult Beauty. The only not quite regret I have is that I did not wait for the goody bag before purchasing the More Glow beauty box from Cult Beauty. It did sell out at some point though even if it came back in stock. That was one box I was not willing to risk… It is not quite a regret, like I mentioned above, however it would have been nicer to just get the three boxes and quality for the gift and leave the rest of the products for some other time, especially since my extra purchases were not urgent by any means nor are they limited edition, well with the exception of the Cheers set from Kopari (probably).

To tell the truth, even though I did spend more this month than I intended, I do not regret it at all. I am actually glad that I got some new goodies. However, I will try to apply a method mentioned by O. and keep the boxes unopened and just grab the products from the boxes, gift and perhaps even the advent calendar as I need them. I haven’t touched the advent calendar yet! Just had a look at the products and left them well alone. Don’t worry. I am sure that I will have some reviews ready in December when it comes to the products from the calendar, but I am in no rush to open them this time. But the idea to hold off as long as I can from playing with the new goodies so that I can still have something to “open” without growing my stash. I did take one of the products from the More Glow Beauty Box, but also left the rest alone. Th other parcel, the one with the goody bag will hopefully reach me tomorrow (just got it… it took me days to post this article). This is new for me, but I am up for this new experience.

Overall, I am okay with the results for October and am incredibly happy that I still have some space for the Net a Porter beauty advent calendar if it will ever launch for the EU. Even though my enthusiasm has been dimming so maybe I won’t be interested in it after all. We shall see.

How did you do in October?

  1. Thanks for the additional empties comments, I miss reading the reviews 🙂 can’t say anything about the products, I don’t think I’ve ever used any of those you mentioned. I’ll try the inkey list treatment sometime next year, because I do have a problem with dry hair, although right now like you I have so many products open, and maybe if I stick to one and use it regularly, it will show some results.
Congrats on having great results in the advent calendar season:)
Since my method is based on quantity, my stash has grown – I was opening the Miin calendar in October, now I’m opening the SkinCity one. I’m curious about your reviews of the Miin stuff, I’ve started to use some (minis came in handy during a business trip) but so far nothing I’d like to repurchase. Did you get the bat eye masks? Those gave me most fun, to be honest

    1. Yes, I did get them. I wanted to post them on Halloween but life… I haven’t tried them yet.

my anxiety reached an all time high for no reason. I cannot imagine living by myself in the near future let alone starting next month. No one has said anything but I started freaking myself out that I would have to go back to the office which would mean moving across country again. I know it would be hybrid work but if I cannot group the days somehow it would be pretty much pointless for me (it takes me longer to get home than it took me to get home from London if you can imagine) Sorry about the rambling. I guess I just started driving myself crazy and perhaps succeeded 🙃

I do have some reviews prepared, but not from the advent calendar. Not just yet. Those will be reserved for December. This year I haven’t even photographed nor filmed the unboxings yet. Hope I won’t regret it 😂 I do have some other interesting products lined up though.

  2. The current situation around doesn’t inspire sense of calm and security. That’d be so awful if you had to move. I hope you won’t have to.

Speaking of N-a-P, I feel fully cured from wanting to buy it because of this poor handling of EU customers
