Glossy Box – The Best time of the Year – December 2020 Box review

glossy box december 2020

Hello. I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas. Also, I hope that you enjoyed the advent calendar unboxing videos/posts that I shared on Instagram. Things did not really go as planned, but we got the other side somehow. I am back today, after a longer than usual break, to share with you my thoughts on the December 2020 Glossy Box.

As some of you might know, if not, I am going to mention it again, I rarely subscribe to beauty boxes these days. There used to be a time when I would get a box every month. Sometimes, I would get all the well known boxes every single month. However, that is no longer the case. Now I have a strategy to ensure that the boxes I do get are worth it. From time to time though, I also get some boxes because they look cute (I just cannot help myself argh!), but also to see what the service and quality of the boxes is like – whether it changed etc.

While I am pretty sure it goes without saying why I got this specific Glossy Box, my motives are a bit more complex this time around. Yes, the first reason is because the box looked so cute and I plan on keeping it for storage purposes – I still have the top of a box from 2016 which I use as a tray to store my favourite perfumes. Most other boxes, especially the classic ones I reused, filled with goodies and gave away as a gift.

The December box was also on sale for BlackFriday so I actually ended up paying a just a bit more than 50% of its actual price. It would have cost me at least this much to get a small and cute storage container… However, I also knew that the box contained a high value item so that did nothing but strengthen my decision to purchase the box. And another reason is that I honestly do not know whether this is going to be my last Glossy Box for a while. A longer while, that is. Not going to get into that here as I might just start crying. Let’s move on.

Glossy Box December 2020 Review

Whatever the reason, the point is that I have the Glossy Box in my possession and thought I should share some of my thoughts.

We already established that the box is more than cute, but was it really worth it? Well, yes. But would I have been happy had I paid full price for it? Hmm… let’s see.

What did the Glossy Box – The Best Time of the Year contain?

  • Symbiosis – Glycolic Acid + RNA Overnight Rejuvenating Eye Serum – worth £102 (full size)
  • Nailberry – Strawberry Jam – worth £15 (full size)
  • Wander Beauty – Baggage Claim Gold Eye Mask Patches – worth £4 (single)
  • SportFX – Blend and Go Make Up Sponge – worth £4.99 (full size)
  • Palmer’s – Cocoa Butter Formula Original Solid Jar – worth £1.50 (mini)

That’s right. No chocolate bar this time around. I barely got used to them and now… I kinda miss it.

As you can see, the contents are not bad, not bad at all. I would not go that far to say that they are amazing as I honestly do not think they are, but they are definitely pretty nice. There are 3.5 full sized products and a mini which is really great. I said 3.5 as the eye patches actually come in a box of 5 if you were to purchase them, so I do not really feel comfortable calling the product full size.

Okay, I am going to stop this right now and I feel I am leaning towards BS and that is not my style. I wanted to have good things to say about this box and I sincerely hope that in time I will come to realise just how amazing the box actually is, but I do not see it. I do believe it is good and I am happy to have spent around 50% of the full price on it, but I am not that convinced that I would have been happy had I paid full price. Not a huge difference, I realise, but still. I know that the total value of the box is higher, much higher than the amount paid, however the products are the ones that fail to convince me.

I realise that one of the products – the Symbiosis Eye Serum is worth over £100 and that is the reason why I feel so bad saying this, but I do not have high hopes for it. I am not saying that the product is bad. I have no way of knowing that without trying the serum and I have not tried anything from the brand before, at least as far as I know. However, I am not sure about Glycolic Acid. Yes, there have been some products with Glycolic Acid that I loved, but most do not work on my skin and having that ingredient in an eye serum aka to be used in an area that is even more sensitive does nothing to convince me that this is a good idea. Of course, we will see in time and I might have to revisit my opinion. As a first impression though, I am not fully convinced it is a good idea.

As far as the rest of the products are concerned, the Wander Beauty Patches are pretty good so I am happy for those. The nail polish just is, at least as far as I am concerned. I don’t really wear coloured nail polish so the chances of the product ending up being properly used are low. The cocoa butter jar from Palmer’s I am curious to try as it has been quite a while since I last attempted to use Palmer’s. And then, there is the SportFX makeup sponge which I have no idea what I am going to use it for. However, it is not the first makeup item that I got or worse, purchased on purpose this year so…

I know that I being quite cynical here and I have no idea why. It just takes more and more to impress me, I guess. I am not necessarily upset with the box nor am I truly disappointed. I would not go that far. It is just that Glossy Box seems seems stuck in time. I have not seen an innovation from them in so long. They are comfortable and have no need to improve anything as they still have a decent customer base, at least that is how it seems to me. However, that is not how these things work. Getting comfortable with your position in business is the worst thing you could do. It leads to lack of innovation and at some point in drop in customers. In short, I find it boring. There, I said it. I want to see something different and not just in the box design (totally welcomed btw).

Overall, this edition of the Glossy Box is not bad, but it just fails to impress. After the year we had, I did have higher hopes and I feel like the brand did not quite manage to deliver. I still think that the box is worth getting every once in a while, but definitely not worth saying subscribed to in the long run. Hope I have not offended any of you, but these my raw, unfiltered thoughts.
