Let’s face it: beauty products are a source of joy for many of us. A swipe of lipstick, a soothing face mask, or a spritz of your favorite perfume can feel like self-care in its purest form. But as we indulge in these small luxuries, we can’t ignore the growing concern about their environmental impact. From excessive packaging to the carbon footprint of production, the beauty industry has a sustainability problem.
Here’s the thing: it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or even guilty about your beauty routine when you consider its environmental toll. Some might suggest giving up beauty products altogether, but let’s be real—that’s not going to happen. Not only is it unrealistic, but it’s also not the solution. If consumers stopped buying beauty products entirely, retailers and manufacturers wouldn’t necessarily become more sustainable—they’d just lose customers and people would lose their jobs. And you? You’d be left feeling deprived while the system remains unchanged. It is not realistic to think that everyone will give up their beauty habits…Like in school, you know? There is always going to be that one somebody who will be against engaging in an activity, who will oppose the majority etc. I am Sur you know what I am talking about so do not make it spell it out haha.
Sustainability in beauty isn’t about deprivation; it’s about making smarter choices that align with your values while still allowing yourself the pleasure of indulging in products you love. It’s about progress, not perfection. The good news? There are ways to enjoy beauty products responsibly without compromising on sustainability.
Why Sustainability in Beauty Matters
The beauty industry generates billions of units of plastic packaging annually, much of which isn’t recyclable. Add to that the energy-intensive processes of product manufacturing, the sourcing of often unsustainable ingredients, and the carbon emissions from shipping, and it’s clear why sustainability is a pressing issue.
But here’s the silver lining: as consumers, we have the power to drive change. By making mindful choices, we can push brands to adopt sustainable practices while reducing our own impact. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being conscious.
How to Enjoy Beauty Responsibly
You don’t have to forgo your favorite products to make a difference. Here are some practical ways to embrace sustainability in beauty:
1. Invest in Refills
Many brands now offer refillable options for everything from foundation to perfume. Refills use less packaging and reduce waste, making them a win-win for you and the planet. Plus, they’re often more cost-effective in the long run.
2. Choose Minimal or No Packaging
Some products, like solid shampoos, conditioners, and bar soaps, come with little to no packaging. These options are not only eco-friendly but also often last longer than their liquid counterparts.
3. Reuse Packaging Creatively
Before tossing out that empty jar of moisturizer or candle container, think about how you could repurpose it. Pad jars can store small items like hair pins, cotton swabs, or travel-sized products. Empty candle jars make excellent storage for makeup brushes or pens.
4. Support Brands That Prioritize Sustainability
Look for brands that are transparent about their environmental efforts, whether it’s using recycled materials, sourcing ingredients ethically, or being carbon-neutral. Certifications like “B Corp,” “Leaping Bunny,” or “Cradle to Cradle” can help guide your choices.
5. Buy Less, But Better
Instead of buying multiple cheap products that you may not finish, invest in high-quality items you truly love and will use to the last drop. This approach reduces waste and often means supporting brands that prioritize sustainability.
6. Recycle Where Possible
Many beauty brands now offer take-back programs where you can return empty packaging to be properly recycled. Alternatively, check your local recycling guidelines to ensure you’re disposing of beauty packaging correctly.
Progress Over Perfection
Let’s be honest: no one is going to be perfectly sustainable, and that’s okay. The goal isn’t to feel guilty about every product you buy, but to make thoughtful decisions and do the best you can. Small changes add up, and when enough people make those changes, the beauty industry will have no choice but to adapt.
You don’t have to give up the products that bring you joy. Instead, focus on how you can enjoy them responsibly: refill that lipstick, repurpose that jar, and recycle that bottle. By being mindful, you can strike a balance between your love of beauty and your commitment to the planet.
I’m not here to make you feel guilty—quite the opposite. This article is about empowering you to enjoy the beauty products you love while finding simple, practical ways to make your routine more sustainable. Trust me, I’m the last person who can judge anyone for buying beauty products. I’m just as tempted by the latest launches as anyone else. But I do try to make small, meaningful changes where I can. For example, I’ve repurposed countless beauty advent calendar boxes over the years to store everything from stationery to socks. I also make an effort to reuse jars and packaging, and whenever there’s a recycling program for a brand I use, I’m more than happy to return my empties.
Since I am also finding new homes for clothing, book, home decor and other items that I am no longer using, I also utilise beauty parcel packaging materials such as paper noodles, plastic bubble wrap etc to send out said items. This way, at least, I know it was not single use packaging.
The point isn’t to shame or preach—it’s to encourage you to think about how you can continue to enjoy your favorite products (and even try new ones!) while being a little kinder to the planet. Small steps matter, and the beauty of sustainability is that you don’t have to sacrifice joy to make a difference.
Sustainability in beauty is not about sacrifice—it’s about empowerment. With every step you take toward a more sustainable routine, you’re not just reducing your own impact; you’re sending a message to the industry. And that’s a pretty beautiful thing.
What steps are you taking to make your beauty journey more sustainable?

That’s a great post, thank you!
I try to follow what you listed.
I welcome small changes made by the manufacturers like shorter tube nozzles (saw on a number of brands here), but i think that like with food the brunt of it should be on manufacturers not the consumers.
Interesting! There are other changes I noticed with some bottles that might seem beneficial but are quite the opposite. Next post will discuss those 🙃 did the small nozzles affect your use of products in any way?
Not at all. And it makes a tube take a little bit less space.
What I found made it harder to use was a tube of Caudalie shower gel thar was made of a super thin plastic, it was hard to get the product out already less than half way through the tube.
Thin or thick? I have been having issues with super thick plastic and no dispenser which is why I asked about the nozzle
It was a liquid shower gel and the plastic of the tube was super thin and too bendable, so it was tedious to squeeze the gel out. It was like the plastic felt liquid-y too.
I has a problem with rock hard plastic and a thick product with a tiny dispenser with shower steam facial from Pixi. Super disagreeable.
